The Sioux Falls Free Thinkers had nothing to do
with the "Plow Art" complaint

The current controversy over religious "Plow Art" has nothing to do with the Sioux Falls Free Thinkers or the Sioux Falls Atheists groups. The controversy arose strictly from a Siouxland Freethinkers group, Eric Novotny, and Amanda Novotny sponsored complaint.

Sioux Falls Free Thinkers and Sioux Falls Atheists are both Trademarked names by the State of South Dakota for exclusive use by Sioux Falls Free Thinkers and Sioux Falls Atheists. Also please note that the Sioux Falls Free Thinkers group has 4 separate words in it's group name while Siouxland Freethinkers has only 2 words in theirs. These are 2 very different groups.

The Sioux Falls Free Thinkers and Sioux Falls Atheists groups were formed late in 2013 because of the authoritarian structure and authoritarian leadership of the Siouxland Freethinkers. The Sioux Falls Free Thinkers and Sioux Falls Atheists groups have no relationship of any kind with the Siouxland Freethinkers, and Eric Novotny and Amanda Novotny were never members of the Sioux Falls Free Thinkers or Sioux Falls Atheists. Free Thought and Open-Minded Thinking are not consistent with the authoritarian thinking of the Siouxland Freethinkers.

However, the Sioux Falls Free Thinkers and Sioux Falls Atheists do believe in the strict separation of Church and State as defined by the Constitution of the United States. For that reason we do not believe religious messages belong on any public property no matter how well intended or who sponsored them. No group, whether it be Christian, Jewish, Islamic, Hindu, Buddhist, Shinto, Wiccan, Humanist, or Atheist has any right to use public funds, public property, or public institutions to promote their beliefs. And very few would wish to see public money, their tax dollars, used to promote a belief system they to not agree with.

All people are, however, free in the United States to promote their beliefs on their private property. If any church or church school wishes to put any religious message on any of their own property they are free to do so.

The Sioux Falls Free Thinkers and Sioux Falls Atheists do not wish to join the Siouxland Freethinkers in their complaint. Our groups are just too widely separated on too many other issues.

For instance looking at the pages on the Sioux Falls Atheists website you will find:

  • Atheist movies and books
  • Christian Heroes movies (Bonhoeffer, Father Romero, Sister Rose and Joan of Arc)
  • Christian History and Bible movies, courses and books
  • Judaism History and Religion movies and courses
  • Islam History and Religion movies
  • The Spiritual Brain (a science and religious experience course)
  • Charities for Atheists (World Vision, Heifer International, and Doctors Without Borders) World Vision is a religious sponsored charity, but what's important to Sioux Falls Atheists is that World Vision is helping others, as are the other charities.
  • And much, much more.

You'll find none of this on the Siouxland Freethinkers website. Sioux Falls Free Thinkers on the other hand are open-minded. People are free to choose what they want to believe. Sioux Falls Free Thinkers and Sioux Falls Atheists simply offer them information to hopefully help them make a more informed choice.
